Occupational Health and Safety at INALUM | Safety Culture

INALUM prioritises occupational health and safety through consistent OHS standards to create a safe and healthy working environment.

Occupational Health and Safety

Worker Safety and Well-being as Part of Operational Excellence

INALUM treats Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and the well-being of its human resources/workers as an integral part of Operational Excellence in sustainability. For INALUM, operational excellence is reflected not only in quality, productivity, and process reliability, but also in management's commitment to ensuring that every activity carried out by workers and partners is performed safely, responsibly, and sustainably.

Building a Culture of Safety Through Continuous Improvement

In line with Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles, OHS implementation is directed at protecting workers and partners, controlling operational risks, preventing incidents, and strengthening the safety culture across all business processes. This approach is supported by an OHS management system, compliance with applicable regulations and standards, stronger competence and emergency preparedness, active worker participation, and the use of technology, including AI-based OHS applications, in daily operations.

The OHS culture is applied comprehensively through an integrated OHS information system covering reporting and follow-up of OHS patrol findings, safety observations (OHS findings by all employees), hazard identification, risk assessment and control, operational risk assessment, the 150-minutes-per-week group exercise programme COG (Come on Guys Olahraga), periodic testing and inspection of industrial equipment, the Safe Work Permit System, and other OHS programmes.

Through a proactive safety culture, INALUM strives to foster a safe, healthy, reliable, and productive working environment. This approach positions occupational health and safety (OHS) not merely as a compliance obligation, but as a shared value embraced and practised through various OHS programmes.

Leading and lagging OHS indicators are monitored and evaluated by individual work groups and Central Safety Committee (CSC) groups. Management then conducts comprehensive, periodic reviews through the Occupational Safety and Health Advisory Committee (P2K3) to support continuous improvement in OHS performance.

Integrating Hazard and Risk Controls into Our Daily Operations

The Company's basic rules for implementing the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (SMK3) and its obligations for hazard and risk control ensure that all operational activities are carried out safely, reliably, and sustainably. SMK3 is applied not only to meet compliance requirements, but also to strengthen incident prevention, risk control, worker participation, and safety culture across all levels of the workforce, including the management of contractors under ICMESH (Inalum Contractor Management Environmental Safety and Health).

As part of its commitment to zero fatalities in managing high and critical risks, the Company integrates Golden Rules into SMK3 as the main principle for controlling high-risk activities. These cover Safety Driving, Confined Space, Working at Height, Electrical Safety & LOTOTO, Lifting & Rigging, Pressure Gas, Water Safety, Hot Work, Molten Metal/High Temperature Safety, and Mobile Equipment.

Stop to Fix

To control critical risks and prevent incidents, the Company applies Stop Work Authority through STOP TO FIX. Everyone has the right to stop work if they find an unsafe act or condition that could lead to a work accident or breach applicable procedures. The supervisor and the risk owner then discuss together to assess the situation and carry out the necessary corrections.

5S: Building a Safe, Efficient, and Sustainable Workplace

Building a Safer and More Efficient Workplace Through 5S

INALUM promotes a structured workplace organization and continuous improvement approach to strengthen operational excellence. This approach is reflected in the implementation of 5S, a workplace management methodology built around Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain, to create a safer, more efficient, productive, and sustainable working environment.

Through 5S, employees are encouraged to keep work areas organized, identify potential hazards and abnormal conditions at an early stage, minimize waste, and use resources more effectively. Beyond maintaining cleanliness and order, this approach fosters discipline, awareness, and shared responsibility for workplace safety and environmental stewardship.

By consistently applying these principles and engaging employees across the organization, INALUM seeks to prevent incidents, improve operational efficiency, reduce waste, and optimize resource use. In this way, 5S serves as a foundation for integrating safety, operational excellence, and sustainability into everyday work practices.

Preparedness and Competence in Emergency Situations

The Company continues to strengthen preparedness for emergencies and fire risks through competence development, training, simulations, and ongoing awareness-raising among all workers and partners.

Preparedness programmes include emergency response training, fire-fighting competitions, outreach on the use of portable fire extinguishers (APAR), evacuation, first aid, and emergency drills. These activities ensure that every worker understands potential emergency conditions, reporting procedures, evacuation routes and assembly points, and the right actions to take in an emergency.

The competence of the Emergency Response Team is also continuously developed through training and scenario-based simulations to improve coordination, response speed, communication, rescue, and control of emergency situations.

Prioritising Worker Well-being through Comprehensive OHS Measures

The occupational health and safety of employees, contractors, and everyone within the Company's premises is our priority. Through all sections/work units and contractors, INALUM proactively and continuously identifies hazards and controls risks in line with the OHS hierarchy of controls.

As a concrete demonstration of this commitment, INALUM has implemented an Occupational Health and Safety Management System (SMK3) that refers to Government Regulation of the Republic of Indonesia No. 50 of 2012 and the international standard ISO 45001:2018.
